Food sustainability is a concept that has been getting quite a bit of attention recently, and with good reason. What we eat, how it’s processed, and what we waste have global impact on our health and mother nature.

As the pressing nature of global problems such as climate change, resource shortage, or public health crises becomes more obvious, the need to understand how food sustainability can provide answers to these issues has heightened.

In this post we will delve into the notion of food sustainability – its depth in it’s effect on human health and positive aspect in maintaining the sustainability of the blue planet for the future generations.

What is Food Sustainability?

Before getting a sense of the implications of food sustainability, let’s understand what it is. Sustainable food is the production and distribution of food, including both socioeconomic and environmental aspects of food, as well as the impact on public health. When we consider sustainable food systems as meeting the needs of the present without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This approach includes:

The Link Between Food Sustainability and Human Health

We are what we eat – our Wellbeing depends on it. From what we eat to what our foods eat (including potential contaminants), diet directly relates to our health. Food sustainability has a range of deep impacts—some beneficial and some detrimental on health.

1. Nutrient-Rich Diets

Food sustainability has several immediate advantages — the biggest one being the increased consumption of nutrient-dense, whole foods. Sustainable farming practices focus on biodiversity and soil health, resulting in higher nutrient crops.

It also means that people are driving to farmers’ markets where they are not only buying fresher, more nutrient-dense vegetables, but they are also consuming locally grown, in season, organic vegetables. Many of these foods are also free from dangerous pesticides and synthetic preservatives, which can make them a healthful option.

Sustainable food system also promotes plant-based diet, which also has the health benefits. Among other benefits, plant-based diets have been associated with reduced rates of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. When we adopt sustainable behaviors, we not only benefit the planet, but we also safeguard our long-term health.

Traditional farming methods sometimes involve the use of artificial pesticides, herbides, and fertilizers which can be harmful for human health. Those chemicals can get into water supplies, food and people’s bodies, where they build up over time.

Humans are more energy intensive than any other organisms, according to Wikipedia. There are also broader environmental impacts: deforestation, pollution of water supplies, loss of biodiversity and production of greenhouse gases.

But food sustainability has a remedy for these urgent environmental issues.

1. Mitigating Climate Change

Agriculture contributes a lot to total global greenhouse gases. Methane, a strong greenhouse gas, in particular is emitted by livestock.

Another side effect of deforestation for agricultural expansion is that it leads to more carbon emissions through diminishing the ability of the earth to soak up CO2. By moving toward sustainable food production systems, we can decrease the environmental footprint of food production systems and do our part to combat climate change.

2. Conserving Water

Water is valuable and limited commodity and agriculture is the biggest user of freshwater globally. Traditional farming practices may also draw down local water resources and pollute them with fertilizer and pesticide runoff.

Furthermore, the growing of drought-resistant crops and organic farming techniques also decrease demands for irrigation, saving valuable water resources. Consuming organically grown food saves water and protects the water quality of our planet’s abundant water supplies.

3. Protecting Biodiversity

Biodiversity is critical for the stability of ecosystems and is fundamental to the functioning of crop systems. Except industrial agriculture frequently results in habitat destruction, loss of species diversity and the decimation of pollinators such as bees.
